Wood Ash & Bio-Char

We love making free, homemade amendments for the garden, they enrich our food forest, garden beds, and soil mix with valuable nutrients like potassium, which is essential for healthy crops. Plus, we enjoy building a fire in the evenings, not just for warmth, but also as a natural mosquito repellant.

We turn homestead biomass into carbon-rich biochar

We properly manage our live oak hammock and surrounding forest, allowing our land to sustainably supply the wood we need for our homestead. We make use of fallen branches and trees, and we also plant fast-growing species to ensure future resources. Bamboo is one of our favorites, it grows back quickly after being cut, providing a renewable source of biomass we'll never run out of.

We use nutrient-rich pond water to activate our biochar. Our ponds are thriving ecosystems, water plants feed and oxygenate the fish while naturally filtering the water. The fish waste adds nitrogen and other nutrients, making the water perfect for charging biochar.
Our Biochar Recipe:
-Burn wood until it reaches the charcoal stage
-Place hot charcoal into a metal pail of pond water
-Let it sit over night to cool and absorb nutrients
-Crush the charcoal into smaller chunks before applying
